Right Relationship is managed according to the Code of Ethics of the Australian Counselling Association.
We commit to protecting your privacy in accordance with the national privacy principles of the Privacy Act 1988 and Privacy Amendments 2001.
The Privacy Act gives individuals the right to information and control regarding the manner in which their personal information is collected, used, disclosed, and stored.
This Privacy Policy outlines how we manage and protect the privacy of your personal information:
- We only collect and record information provided by you (or any others you have authorised us to contact) necessary for the provision of counselling and psychotherapy services.
- During the course of therapy we may record notes regarding what happened in individual sessions, theoretical frameworks and developments in therapy.
- We undertake to treat all your information with the utmost respect and confidentiality. If you have any concerns regarding how your information is used or stored, please get in contact with us.
- We will not disclose any identifiable information about you without your written consent. We will keep a record of your consent.
- To protect your privacy (within the limits of the law) we will not respond to any contact with third parties unless mutually agreed between you and us. We will inform you if any contact occurs.
- To maintain and build on standards of practice and effective therapy, your therapist may present and discuss their work with senior colleagues or their professional supervisor. All information is de-identified to preserve your anonymity. Maintaining high standards of practice through supervision is required as a requisite of maintaining registration with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).
- We hold all records for at least seven years or as otherwise required.
- Under the Privacy Act, you are able to access any personal information we have recorded. Please discuss this with your therapist if this becomes an issue. We may require you to put this request in writing and will endeavor to provide you with the required information within 30 days.
Personal and Confidential Information:
As part of providing a counselling and psychotherapeutic service, Right Relationship will need to collect and record personal information from you that is relevant to your current situation. This information will be a necessary part of any assessment, diagnosis and treatment conducted. We retain this information to document what happens during sessions, and to enables your therapist to provide a relevant and informed service.
All personal information gathered by the therapist during the provision of counselling and psychotherapeutic services will remain confidential and secure except where :
- It is subpoenaed by a court, or
- Failure to disclose the information would place you or another person at serious and imminent risk; or
- Your prior approval has been obtained to :
a) provide a written report to another professional or agency. E.g. a GP or a lawyer; or
b) discuss the material with another person, e.g. a parent or employer;
c) or if disclosure is otherwise required or authorised by law.
